The BMW X5 (E70 N52/N55, F15 N55/N57, G05 B58) puts a heavy thermal load on the cooling system thanks to weight, towing, and Colorado altitude. We see electric water pumps fail between 60–90k miles, expansion tanks crack at the seam, and thermostat housings leak from the plastic flange.
Every X5 cooling job at ISA is replaced as a system — pump + thermostat + expansion tank + upper/lower hoses where age warrants — and vacuum-filled with the BMW ISTA bleed routine.
Engine & Platform Notes
- N52 (E70): replace water pump and thermostat together; bleed at expansion tank
- N55 / B58: electric water pump with integrated wiring; ISTA test before condemning
- N57 diesel: separate EGR cooler and main coolant circuit — both bleed independently
Common BMW X5 issues
- Electric water pump failure (whining, intermittent overheat)
- Expansion tank cracking — coolant smell, no visible leak cold
- Thermostat housing weep at the gasket
- Heater core scale from neglected coolant
