Dashboard Warning Light Guide
See a light you don't recognize? Find it below for a plain-English explanation, urgency, and what to do next.
Check Engine Light
The engine computer detected a fault and stored a code. Steady = drivable, flashing = active misfire (stop driving).
ABS
Anti-lock braking system is offline. Regular brakes still work — ABS won't engage in a panic stop.
Tire Pressure (TPMS)
At least one tire is below the safe pressure threshold (typically 25% below placard).
Oil Pressure
Engine oil pressure is critically low. The engine can seize within minutes.
Battery / Charging
The charging system has failed. You're running on battery power alone.
Coolant Temperature
The engine is overheating.
Airbag / SRS
The supplemental restraint system has a fault. Airbags may not deploy in a crash.
Brake System
Low brake fluid, parking brake engaged, or a hydraulic fault. Don't ignore.
EPC (Electronic Power Control)
VW/Audi throttle and engine management fault. Engine may go into limp mode.
Traction Control / Stability
Traction or stability control is disabled or has a fault.
Glow Plug (Diesel)
A glow plug or its control module has failed. Common on TDI and Mercedes diesels.
DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)
The particulate filter needs to regenerate or has clogged.
Service / Maintenance Required
Scheduled maintenance interval reached (oil, brake fluid, inspection). Not a fault.
Low Fuel
Roughly 1–2 gallons remaining.
Low Washer Fluid
Windshield washer reservoir is low.
High Beam
Your high beams are on. Switch off for oncoming traffic.
Turn Signal / Hazard
Turn signal is on. Rapid flashing = a bulb is out.
Fog Lamp
Fog lamps are on.
Transmission Temperature
Transmission fluid is overheating. Severe damage in minutes.
AWD / 4WD Fault
All-wheel-drive system fault detected.
